    The earliest one got to official RoW games against England were the matches arranged in 1970 to fill the gap after the SA series fell through.

    The RoW side was very strong Here is the Lord's RoW side

    Having down a bit of digging, they were 3-day games. The home side was
    billed as "England" and looks to be very close to a first choice England
    XI. The RoW side was very strong. In the first of the two matches it
    was:

    CC Hunte
    EJ Barlow
    Hanif Mohammad
    GS Sobers
    RB Kanhai
    KC Bland
    *JR Reid
    +ATW Grout
    CC Griffith
    WW Hall
    LR Gibbs

    No Graeme Pollock, but apart from that it looks very close to the best possible RoW side in 1965. The first match was badly affected by rain
    and was drawn. The second match was abandoned without a ball bowled. A footnote to the scorecard reads "When play was not possible until late
    on the second day it was agreed to play a single innings match of 70
    overs (so not first-class)." The Nawab of Pataudi replaced Eddie Barlow
    for that match. The RoW XI won by 9 wickets, with Sobers' bowling
    figures being 15-6-22-5 - not bad for a limited overs match!

    "England" v "ROW" was a regular fixture at the Scarborough Festival.
    It might sometimes be called DB Close's XI v R Benaud's XI, but there
    was just about always something that approximated.

    I'd consider Sutcliffe and Donnelly to have pretty decent cases (although Donnelly admittedly played very few tests)

    Collinge & Taylor from the bowling side have some claims as well

    Yes, if he'd played more he'd have been in contention. Sutcliffe was
    never quite the same after being hit on the head by a fast bowler (this
    was before helmets, of course).

    I suspect that Donnelly would have been seen as easily the best player
    of the three if he'd had a career of conventional length, but he
    didn't, so he's not, and it has to remain a suspicion.

    I'd find it hard to call Reid great. Batting and bowling averages both 33 Taylor with 111 wickets @ 26 is pretty solid
    Reid had 1 100 from 36 innings vs England and 16 wickets @ 36.5 at under a wicket a match
